One

For now you know one of the greatest
principles of success; if you persist long enough
you will win.

~
Og Mandino

If I make it to the finish line, that will be victory enough for me.

I have one fear, and one fear only. I hope I'm not the fattest woman on the course. After the carb-fest I've been on since, oh, about Easter, I very well could be! You know how some pregnant woman really do eat for two? Well I've been taking that carb-loading-before-a-race theory very seriously. Heh.

Really, I just hope I don't make a fool of myself and I hope it's as fun as I think it will be. Thanks for being with me!

Have a great race Debbi! You have trained diligently, and I think you're just going to have a blast. I'm a little jealous of the fun :)

You are the WINNER in soooo many ways. Have fun!

All best for tomorrow, Debbi! You've inspired me the last while with your training -- I'm not sure I could do a half-marathon, but I signed up for a programme at the gym to set some personal goals. You've already won, tomorrows just the...er...icing on the cake. The cherry on top? Interesting how those metaphors of success refer to food, eh?

I'll be rooting for you from Chicago!! WTG my friend!! You have been so inspiring and I can't wait to hear the good news that you've made it through the race.

I hope you treat yourself to a massage afterwards :)

Oh come now, after everything you've achieved, after all the inspiration you've been, when you're actually going to accomplish the amazing thing of running competitively (competing with your past, I mean) you're not going to get all chick on us, and worry about whether your racing outfit makes you look fat? or look at the other runners and get upset that you're not as thin as the college sophomore who runs cross-country all year?

Your journey has been an inspiration, so think of yourself as my hero and don't waste your energy worrying about anyone else!

Best of luck for you tomorrow, Debbi. And no, you won't be the fattest person there. Good grief.

You're a lean, mean, running machine!

Have fun because you're worked hard to get to this point!

I might just end up running a mini-marathon so I can eat half a dozen Krispy Kremes the night before :) I'll be checking those race results tomorrow afternoon. Good luck!

Debbi, best of luck in the race. I wrote you early on to say that I was coming in from cincinnati to do the race but reality reared its ugly head....chemo apparently ate part of my hip and the pain was too much to do all the training. I am fine walking 5 miles or so...just can't do the long distances right now. When the gun goes off at a race, no matter how many races I had done, I cried...first from the rush of getting started and also because I was THERE, dammit. I hope the same thing happens to you. It is a lovely feeling. You will do fine. best regards, Mary in Cincinnati

Deb, don't know if you'll see this before the race, but I'm so happy and proud for you! A couple of last-minute motivational tips:

1) Remember the Penguin. "The miracle is not that I finished, it's that I had the Courage to Start."

2) Find someone at your pace with a nice butt, and follow him. It will make the run so much more pleasant!

3) When you get close to the finish line, SLOW DOWN. Do not sprint. Slow down to catch your wind so that when they take your picture you have open eyes and a closed (smiling) mouth. Trust me on this.

You're gonna rock Nashville, honey. I'll be thinking good thoughts for you tomorrow!
